CCA Meeting August 27, 2012 Skagit Valley College

President Greg Tate called the short meeting to order around 7:15 pm.

First item of business was the Burn Party coming up Saturday September 8, 10 am – 5 pm at Camano Island Country Club Beach Two, 1433 Beach Dr. Please see previous e-mail attachment for directions. We only have 2 raku kilns to use. If anyone has a portable one they could bring that would be great. Roger Cocke asked for people to bring glazes, tongs, gloves, etc. So far we will have Rainbow, Copper Penney, TZ, and CKK6 80/20 clear. Please coordinate with Roger if you can bring additional glazes. Bring a maximum of 4 bisque pieces to fire, nothing too small or big. Bring additional bisque pieces for guests to fire. You can also bring your pieces pre-glazed ready to fire. Roger suggested we need to think about getting another kiln for future use. As you can imagine, transporting a kiln is not easy and is hard on the kiln. Perhaps a fund-raiser? Something to think about. Bring Food to share and drinks. This is a beautiful location and just a fun day to fire some pots, eat, drink, walk the beach and swing on the park swings.

Greg reminded us that tonight (Monday) was the deadline for getting images to Irene Lawson for jurying as a group at Allied Arts for their 2013 lineup of shows. If CCA is accepted they will suggest a date for us to show next year. Your image needs to have the usual: Title, description, media, dimensions, year and price. Images should be representative of current work. Image should be a minimum of 180 dpi.

Lynn Guiliani reported that the Peter Flynn throwing workshop went really well. Peter stayed in Pat Ball’s studio apartment. She said Peter was quiet unless he was talking about clay when his passion became clear. Pat spoke about what a great teacher Peter is and how good it was to get fresh ideas and stimulation for working in clay. Both Pat and June Haddox were so impressed that they plan to take classes from Peter at Marjon Ceramics in Arizona next spring. CCA hopes Peter can come back next year.

Future workshops:

Makiko Ichiura said there were a few openings left for the Tip Toland workshop January 18-20, 2013 for $150 including clay. The full amount must be paid by the October meeting. Makiko will provide a detailed supply list and instructions on how to prepare your clay and begin to make a mask.

New Business: Officer Elections are coming up in September. Karen Jackson presented a slate of nominees: Dinah Steveni, President; chair Benzalel, VP; Kathy Huckleberry, Secretary; Susan Cohen Thompson, Treasurer. Chaim has a conflict with the 4th Monday as a meeting day and will only be able to accept the position if we change the date to the 1st or 2nd Monday. The group seemed agreeable. Greg will contact Chaim to see which week will work best and we will vote on it at that time.

Before we got into our Swap Meet, Candice Vitale, Anacortes high school teacher announced that she has LOTS of glaze chemicals to give away as she is now purchasing ready made glazes. She also has 9 boxes of copper enamels and a truck load of low fire glasses and other assorted items. She really needs to get rid of stuff and make room in her classroom. Candice will be at her classroom Tues (yesterday), Thurs. and Friday. Please call her at 391-0531 before you show up at the school.

Lynn gave a plug to Café Press (cafepress.com) an on-line company with some pottery items like aprons and t-shirts. Lynn praised their customer service: they replaced a t-shirt that didn’t fit at no additional charge and just told her to keep the one she had or pass it on to someone else.

Pheonix announced she was visiting a gallery/gift shop in Seaside, OR and was encouraged and accepted to sell her work there. We should all carry small pieces or at least images when we travel!
